Former NBA star Derrick Rose reflected on his past in a thoughtful social media post, underscoring the importance of demonstrating courage amid everyday hardships.
Rose, who retired in September after an acclaimed 15-year career, overcame numerous obstacles to achieve NBA stardom. He was born and raised by a single mother in an overcrowded household in Englewood, one of Chicago's South Side's most dangerous neighborhoods.
His upbringing was marred by poverty and crime as he refined his basketball skill set and earned money playing pick-up games at Murray Park.
Nevertheless, Rose attended one year of college at Memphis (2007-08) and was drafted No. 1 by his hometown Chicago Bulls in the 2008 NBA draft. Three years later, he became the league's youngest MVP, winning the award at age 22.
