The F1 penalty points system got its first scalp in Kevin Magnussen. The system has been put in place to ensure driving standards don't fall below a certain level. As part of the system, the drivers are given penalty points based on their on-track transgressions.

The points are given on the basis of the severity of the transgressions. If a driver crosses 12 points during a 12-month period, he faces a race ban. Kevin Magnussen was the first driver who had to take a ban as he accumulated 12 points within a year.
