Legendary college football coach Nick Saban praised the Atlanta Falcons' approach with rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The timing proved perfect as Penix is now stepping in for struggling veteran Kirk Cousins.
Saban shared his insights about Penix, who takes over from Cousins - the $180 million quarterback benched after throwing nine interceptions in his last five games. The Falcons made this switch despite still being in playoff contention.
Speaking on the "Pat McAfee Show" on Thursday, Saban offered a thoughtful analysis of quarterback development. His comments arrived just as Penix prepared for his first NFL start against the New York Giants.
"Even in Michael Penix's opportunity to just spend three quarters of the season as a backup, no pressure, just learn - learn how to be a professional. The guy has great ability. He's got the right mindset. He's a good guy. He's going to be a good leader in the league," said Saban.
