Wayne Gretzky stepped down as vice chairman of the Edmonton Oilers in May 2021. He took the role in 2016 as a minority partner and key advisor to the team’s owner, Daryl Katz. Gretzky announced his decision on social media, thanking the Oilers organization, the city and the fans.
"With great appreciation, I wanted to let everyone know that I have decided to step away as Vice Chairman of the Edmonton Oilers effective today," Gretzky tweeted.
Gretzky explained that the pandemic and life changes meant he couldn’t dedicate enough time to the role.
"The Oilers, their fans, and the city of Edmonton have meant the world to me and my family for over four decades - and that will never end." Gretzky wrote. "Given the pandemic and other life changes, I realize I will not be able to dedicate the time nor effort needed to support this world-class organization.
