The New York Mets beat their closest rivals the New York Yankees and three other teams to lock up Juan Soto to a 15-year contract worth $765 million. With an opt-out clause, the total value of the deal could stretch out to $805 million, and all of it will be paid up front with zero deferred money.
Mets owner Steve Cohen seemed prepared right from the start of the offseason. They knew that if they had to outbid other teams, they would have to take a major gamble. That meant offering Soto more than what a two-way player like Shohei Ohtani with dual skills was offered by the Los Angeles Dodgers last season.
The Dodgers' $700 million, 10-year contract featured 97.1% deferred money that brings down Ohtani's present-day contract value to $460.8 million. Juan Soto, has thus received more than $300 million than the previous signed contract in the sport's history.
