The Dallas Cowboys are one of the wealthiest professional sports franchises in the world. In 1989. Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys from former owner H.R. "Bum" Bright for about $140 million.
In 1983, though, Donald Trump was reportedly approached about an opportunity to buy the NFL franchise. He declined and on Jan. 1, 1984, the New York Times published his thoughts on a potential new owner of the NFL franchise. Trump said that he 'felt sorry' for the potential new owner. He said that even if they ended up being successful, it wouldn't be impressive.
"I feel sorry for the poor guy who is going to buy the Dallas Cowboys," Trump said on January 1, 1984 as reported by the New York Times. "It's a no-win situation for him, because if he wins, well, so what, they've won through the years, and if he loses, which seems likely because they're having troubles, he'll be known to the world as a loser."
